Highlights of a Tour of Spain
One of the most beautiful countries in Europe, Spain is a popular tourist destination for travelers from around the world. But what should you see when planning a tour of Spain? While there is enough to see and do in Spain to fill a lifetime, there are a few highlights that no tour of Spain should be without.
Barcelona
Most travelers agree that a tour of Spain should include a trip to Barcelona. Spend some time walking along La Rambla, mile-long boulevard that is the center of life in the city. It has the feel of a street festival, with shops, vendors, street performers and restaurants. Buy a snack from the Boqueria food market or enjoy tapas along the way. And be sure to admire the beautiful architecture and buildings. Barcelona also boasts amazing architecutal landmarks, such as the cathedral La Sagrada Familia and the houses on Paseo de Gracia’s Manzana del la Discordia. Sports fans can also visit the Olympic stadium and other venues from the 1992 Games.
Madrid
Another amazing city to visit during your tour of Spain is Madrid. Madrid is home to some of the best museums in the world, and if you like art, a stop in Madrid is essential. Museo del Prado, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and the Museuo Thyssen-Bornemisza all make a trip to Madrid worthwhile. Also in Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, a centrally located square that was the center of city life in the 17th century. It is now lined with cafes and is well known for its festivals. The Royal Palace, built in 1724 for King Philip V is also a must-see on your tour of Spain.
Beyond the Major Cities
There are many other things to do on your tour of Spain outside of the major cities of Barcelona and Madrid. Take a trip to Pamplona, home of the famous Running of the Bulls. If you’re lucky enough to be there in July, you can watch the running (or even participate!) and enjoy the festival that surrounds the yearly event. Another thing to be sure to enjoy as part of your tour of Spain is Spanish cooking. Enjoy tapas in each city you visit. Many locals enjoy a “tapas crawl” – going from café to café tasting a small bit at each location. Soak in the local culture; stroll along the streets and enjoy the life that surrounds you. And be sure to enjoy (and even try) some flamenco dancing!
